Briefly, the Wright Flyer 1 is a name given to the airplane used in the first successful heavier than air powered flights, on December 17th, 1903. The Wrights made four successful flights that day (a few sources say five), ranging from the first flight of 12 seconds, piloted by Orville, covering a total distance of 120 ft (36.5 m), to the last and longest, in which Wilbur flew 852 feet, or 259.7 meters, in 59 seconds. read more
A number of individuals and groups have attempted to build reproductions of the Wright Flyer for demonstration or scientific purposes. In 1978, 23-year-old Ken Kellett built a replica Flyer in Colorado and flew it at Kitty Hawk on the 75th and 80th anniversaries of the first flight there. read more
