Beethoven reuses many of the effects that exist in the fifth symphony, but to achieve a much different end. It's also probably the most forward-looking of his symphonies, as foreshadows the tone poems of the later romantic period and also does not conform to the 4-movement form of most symphonies at the time. read more

Favorite movement: 5th, slow movement (great melodies, and I love the way it builds up as it moves along) Favorite segment of a movement: the double fugue which immediately follows the Turkish March (9th, mvt IV) Favorite moments: The horn playing the theme "early" before the Eroica 1st mvt recap. No. 6, the Pastoral. (The first answer is incorrect. No. 9 is NOT the Pastoral Symphony.) It is less bombastic than many of Beethoven's later works, highly creative and "paints pictures" in the audience's head. It sounds less like Mozart and traditional classical than Beethoven's early symphonies. It is really unique. Plus, great clarinet parts in it. read more
