In short, it's uncomfortable and just bad representation. Listen to all the media out there and they'll give you multiple stories of 'token ethnic characters'. This certainly does happen in media and whilst I appreciate the efforts to include us non-white people…. It feels patronising. read more
Forced diversity is often fake looking, creating an uncomfortable experience for both the media consumer and the people taking part in creating the media. However, it's also incredibly patronising to assume that minorities need white help to ‘get there’. read more
We were already asking the exact same question back in my 1970s schooldays -- a time when media ownership anywhere in the world was far more diversified than today. We should care because media in the hands of a few causes media coverage to be skewed in some way -- either in the extent of coverage or in the 'angles' of the coverage. read more
