What kind of spray paint should I use on Styrofoam balls?

Do not use solvent based spray paint. It will dissolve the styrofoam. Water based paint will not usually adhere. I do recommend a thin coat of white glue (Elmer's type) allow it to dry and it will create a protective barrier that will accept spray paint. You can also use Plaster of Paris or spackle for water based paints. read more

A high pigment spray paint will do the trick, but remember the surface is porous, and when it comes to spray paint and porous surfaces what happens is that the medium the paint is suspended in soaks in leaving the pigment to fragment and particalize on the surface, so several coats will be needed. read more

Spray paint is particularly risky because of the chemicals found in it that cause Styrofoam to melt, but there are exceptions. Reading the label is the best policy. Even if a paint is compatible with Styrofoam, one should keep in mind that multiple layers of paint will be needed to evenly coat the nooks and crannies in the material. read more
