Earhart purchased her model 10-E Electra in 1936 and named the aircraft the "Flying Laboratory" due to the amount of new and untested equipment that was on board. Authorities declared both Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, lost at sea on July 18, 1937, and her plane was never found. read more
