Both free and slave state members of Congress in 1850 did not want war and were eager to compromise and come to an agreement. However, the future laws like the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and legal decisions like the Dred Scott Decision in 1857 along with John Brown’s raid in Kansas with his trial and execution, and allowing both slave owners and abolitionists in Kansas divided the country leading towards Civil War. read more
