The Red Cross is in 190 different countries, all sovereign organisations but united in the mission. So the American Red Cross is funded by American donations and presumably some government support. Just like Danish Red Cross is funded by Danish donations and government support. read more
In 2010, the American Red Cross wrote a check for $4.3 million to its sister organization the International Federation of the Red Cross for disaster preparedness work. On top of the $4.3 million, according to budget figures the charity provided to Grassley, the American Red Cross spent another $2 million on its own to manage the grant. read more
The Red Cross is not funded by the government; its budget comes from donations as well as cost-recovery fees that are charged for some services. In certain circumstances, the Red Cross recieves government money because the government has contracted the Red Cross to carry out some aspect of relief efforts. read more
