Before the Jurassic, dinosaurs did already exist, but niches were taken by other animals, such as the gigantic terrestrial crocodiles called rauisuchians, some of which reached 8 meters in length, large primitive mammal-like animals such as dicynodonts, and mammal-like predators called cynodonts. read more

Stegosaurus is one of the most recognizable genera of dinosaurs and lived during the mid to late Jurassic. Archaeopteryx, a primitive bird-like dinosaur, appeared in the Late Jurassic. Aurornis xui, which lived in the late Jurassic, may be the most primitive avialan dinosaur known to date, and is one of the earliest avialans found to date. read more
