Bulgaria was managed as an integral part of the Soviet Empire along with the other military spoils. There were no differences for the ordinary people between the Soviet Union itself and the rest of the Soviet Empire. read more

Under socialism Bulgaria was reputed to have one of the best medical systems in Eastern Europe; today there is a huge emigration of medical personnel, given that salaries for health-care workers in Bulgaria are the lowest in Europe and the severe lack of medical equipment (once good, now antiquated). read more
