The Works Progress Administration started in 1935, and had the most visible effect on South San Francisco. WPA workers made improvements to Orange Park, removed dirt from surrounding hills for San Francisco Airport bay fill, and built a new Post Office on Linden Avenue in the late 1930s. read more
The 1930s were also the best of times, a time to build. In the Bay Area, two huge bridges -- over the bay from San Francisco to Oakland, and over the Golden Gate strait from San Francisco to Marin -- were built at the same time. The Bay Bridge was built in three years and seven months and opened in November 1936 -- two months ahead of schedule. read more
