Well, the prime problem is Diamond is extremely hard unless it is struck along certain lattices. Now, you don't want your armor to be hard and brittle, because as soon as it is hit the whole thing will probably shatter. Plus, if you hit it on the lattice, it would shatter. When these tanks were first put in service around 1982 their Chobham armor was strictly classified. It is possible that the armor and its manufacturing process is still technically classified, however, it ceased to be a secret quite some time ago and most MBTs now use some variation of this, although perhaps without the depleted uranium component. read more
