One principle reason that the Americans sought independence was in order to spread westward over the Appalachians. The crown had maintained a policy of reserving those lands for Native use. Great Britain did win the War of 1812; however it was a stalemate. Britain saw no need to continue the pointless fighting and the Americans didn't want to suffer more casualties for a failed invasion of pro-British Canadian territory. In 1815, at the end of the war, Britain had: Pushed back the entire American advancement into Canada. read more
