The most likely theory is that the material now in the Oort Cloud probably formed closer to the young Sun in the earliest epochs of solar system formation. read more

The sphere of the Oort Cloud was hypothesised to exist around our Solar System and other similar planetary systems by astronomer Jan Oort in 1950. Since then, astronomers have tracked objects moving through it but are yet to make direct observations of the cloud itself. read more

Just to be clear, Voyager 1 will not reach the Oort cloud for another 300 years and will take 30,000 years to traverse it. Once past the Oort cloud (whose existence is only hypothetical) can we properly say that it has left the solar system. read more

The Oort Cloud is a theoretical spherical cloud of predominantly icy planetesimals that is believed to surround the Sun at a distance of up to around 100,000 AU (2 ly). This places it in interstellar space, beyond the Sun’s Heliosphere where it defines the cosmological boundary between the Solar System and the region of the Sun’s gravitational dominance. read more
