Also a an android is a synthetic entity which goes beyond in many aspect the typical meaning of robot (mechanical is a subset of synthetic; for example an android could be made of synthetic flesh, I would not call it a robot then). So there is an overlap between the two terms; a humanoid robot could be considered as a mechanical android. read more
