British captain John Byron of the Royal Navy claimed them for King George III in 1765. He founded a settlement on one of the islands in 1766, unaware that there was already a French settlement on one of the others founded in 1764. read more

The British never invaded the Falkland Islands, they belong to the UK and are now an overseas territory of the UK. There used to be a dispute with Spain but Spain left and the UK has now taken the islands over. Spain never complained and in 1863 saluted the UK flag on the Falklands, so there is no dispute. read more
