Masaoka created the first talkie anime, Chikara to Onna no Yo no Naka, released in 1933, and the first anime made entirely using cel animation, The Dance of the Chagamas (1934). Seo was the first to use the multiplane camera in Ari-chan in 1941. read more

The first anime with voiceovers was Chikara to Onna no Yo no Naka (“In the World of Power and Women”) in 1933, of which there are no surviving prints. And the first anime film was Momotaro’s Divine Sea Warriors, made in 1944. It was a propoganda piece funded by the Navy. read more

おとぎマンガカレンダー, or Otogi Manga Calendar, was the first anime series to be produced and the first to be televised. It ran from 1961-1964. Astro Boy first aired in 1963, making it one of the older anime series, but not the oldest. read more
