Northern California's state and regional parks have a a small inventory of rental cabins among hundreds of tent and RV sites. Nearest to Palo Alto are those in the Santa Cruz Mountains and in southern Marin County, across the Golden Gate Bridge. read more

If you talk to the right person, you can get the gate code to come in after dark. The park is a bit strange in that it gets some folks camping because they have no other housing, but it has never been a problem for us.
