Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay closes down and transfers its last prisoners. At it’s peak period of use in 1950s, “The Rock, or “”America’s Devil Island” housed over 200 inmates at the maximum-security facility. Alcatraz remains an icon of American prisons for its harsh conditions and record for being inescapable. read more
Marion prison in Illinois essentially replaced Alcatraz as the highest security prison in the federal system. It in turn was replaced by the Colorado ADX, which remains the highest security prison in the federal system. read more
After the Department of Justice closed Alcatraz in 1963, the General Services Administration took over, with mostly maintenance workers working on the island. read more
