Where to cut dogs nails?

If your dog has black nails, look at the underside of the nail and you will notice that towards the tip the nail separates out into a triangular shape with two outer ‘walls’. At this point, there is no quick and it is safe to cut the tip off. read more

If the quick is cut, the nail will bleed and the dog will feel pain. On light-colored nails, it is easy to see the quick (as pictured above). Many dogs have black or darker-colored nails, making it impossible to see the quick. read more

If your dog has dark nails you won't be able to see the quick. Carefully trim the nails back a little at a time to avoid cutting into it. You might have a groomer or vet show you how far to trim the nails. If a dog’s nails grow too long, the quick will grow with it. Frequent trimmings will make the quick recede back to a normal length. read more
