For families, most preferred suburbs are those within preferred secondary school zones. I've lived in Christchurch all my life - but mostly on the west and north side, and even in Kaiapoi. I lived there before and after the Christchurch earthquakes. If you have a family - generally, near the schools thought best in Christchurch. Eg. read more

I lived in Christchurch for 10/11 months in 2014, working on the rebuild of the city. When I first arrived, I couldn't believe the state the city was in, it was incredible, the devastation was clearly evident. read more

Basically, Christchurch just alternates nice and shit suburbs, there isn't really a nice side of town and a bad side. The East is generally a bit shitter, but there's shit parts in the West too. TL;DR: North-East Hamilton, South Wellington (or just Wellington city really), and all over Christchurch, but generally more Western. read more
