Illiteracy is worse. If you have scientific knowledge but no literacy, then nobody can get an education. If you have literacy but no scientific knowledge, people can be educated in a wide variety of disciplines, including science. read more
Scientific literacy is low across America, and there is a section of the population that almost celebrates opposing science. This is a cultural affair that is almost uniquely American. I have been to, and interacted with several cultural groups, and nowhere on earth is individualism as celebrated as in USA. read more
