Red Fort or Lal Qila was built by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad. The construction of the fort was completed in 1648 and a large moat was built to surround the palace. The city was later known as Old Delhi.
