Cambridge is vastly more prestigious, and with good reason: no-one could surely argue against the proposition that Cambridge is the better university. By far. Both have some pretty river-side walks (though Durham's are more dramatic). Oxford has much better museums though. Bill Bryson prefers Durham, if that matters to you. I love them both to bits. I'll close by saying that although I think Oxford is the better choice on most criteria, it's a very personal thing. I have warm feelings about both places. read more

My view is that it's irrelevant whether Oxford deserves its reputation or not. The point is that it has a reputation that is significantly better than Durham's. And if you want university to open career doors for you, that will matter a lot. Durham is an excellent university. Oxford is renowned throughout the world. read more
