The notion that World War II was worse for non-combatants but World War I was worse for combatants reflects the perspective of Great Britain and France, both of which had a far higher number of military fatalities in World War I than in World War II (which is the reason why the"Great War" is more present in the collective memory in these countries than anywhere else). read more
