Mitsuko Uchida is the most famous by far. She was born in Japan, studied in Vienna as a youth and later emigrated to the UK, becoming a naturalized citizen of that country. One of the many greats battling for the title of best 20th-century pianist, Richter is part of a handful of mighty Russian pianists who emerged in the mid-20th century. He wasn’t a big fan of the recording process, however, so his best albums are recordings of his live performances including those in Amsterdam in 1986, in New York in 1960 and in Leipzig in 1963. read more
