By 1502, the Florentine merchant and explorer Amerigo Vespucci had figured out that Columbus was wrong, and word of a New World had spread throughout Europe. America was later named for Vespucci. Columbus arrived in the modern day Americas in 1492 before Vespucci, but around 1502 Vespucci was the one that demonstrated that Columbus had not landed in Asia and they were on a different continent altogether. read more
