In 1796, the young Scottish physician Mungo Park became the first of the Europeans, who reached the Niger. Park has found that the Niger flows to the east and has nothing to do with either Senegal or the Gambia - before Europeans believed that the Niger is divided into these rivers. read more

I dont know but i think my bet would be that it was a member of the community that lived in the region of the river Niger. I mean there were communities that fished in the Niger before Mungo Park was even born. It was a mystery to the outside world until the Scottish explorer Mungo Park came across the river in June 1786. read more
