Transylvania is not a “territory”, nor a “dominion”. It is inhabited by people who have the right to choose their own path. Romania and Hungary are political constructions based on the will of the people. They can not “have rights” over other lands without respective lands inhabitants’ will. read more
So between 1003–1526 Transylvania paid with taxes to Hungary for its relative autonomy. After that, Hungary was never independent or powerful enough to claim Transylvania by itself. After the Battle of Mohács in 1526 the last voivod of Transylvania (Szapolyai János) conquered some “leftover” territories of Hungary and declared himself King of Hungary. read more
