For the moment, most people see Tesla as in the lead in the race for self driving cars. The next leg of the race will include car manufacturers. The major car makers are determined to make their own joint initiative - they don’t want to be displaced by Apple/Google. That's a matter of opinion: Google launched their self-driving car a few years ago (2009*) whereas Tesla launched theirs roughly a year ago. Tesla does have the advantage of a “swarm mentality” in that all of their cars which are autopilot enabled can gather data and send that back to a data centre to be processed. read more
