Probably Robert E Lee. He led the Confederates main army, the army of Northern Virginia, most of the war. The US never had as good a general until Grant. Lee led a war they were never supposed to win, and he came within inches of it. His first major slip up didn't come until 2 years after the war started, at Gettysburg. read more
