Why are knights titled 'Ser' in GoT and not 'Sir'?

And in the real world, 'sir' is the title given to knights. So that doesn't really explain why Martin chooses a novel (yet homophonous) spelling! I suspect the reason is just 'to look different', given the preconceptions people have about knights in fantasy. read more
