English does that - we can call all merfolk, ‘mermaids’ just as we can call all foals (baby horses), ‘colts’. But technically, ‘colts’ are male baby horses and ‘fillys’ are female baby horses. I don’t remember an in-universe explanation as to why there are only female mermaids in Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. But if I were to hazard a guess, it’s possible that mermaids are an offshoot of the human race in which females mate with human males to produce more mermaid females. read more
