Most "mother lode type deposits are found in "hard" rock, as opposed to sedimentary rock. So in essence the difference is mode of formation. Non-metallic minerals can form a lower temperatures as well as high temperatures, but hydrothermal deposits require much higher temperatures and pressures. read more
