Yes. I first came across this discrepancy while grading exams for primary school students in Burundi. In Burundi, a small country in east Africa, people learn that there are only five continents. North and South America are collectively referred to as "Amerique" (America) and Antarctica is not counted. read more

I've always considered North and South America as two separate continents no more joined then the others. However they are sometimes referred to as one continent as in "the americas" or even just "america". read more
