Why are North Indian states called 'cow belt' states?

I guess North India in the question means the so called cow belt states aka BIMARU states. The explanation trotted out quite often is that North India had to bear the brunt of a lot of foreign invasions and wars and hence people there are crude and harsh, continue to be aggressive and disruptive. read more
