Why are people so against flutes in a jazz band?

I don't think anyone opposes flutes in jazz. Flute is a great jazz instrument. In the earliest days of jazz, loud instruments were favored, so bass lines were often covered by tuba players, and banjos were heard rather than guitars. read more

I wasn’t aware that people were so against flutes in jazz band. If you mean big band, then you don’t see them very often (and parts aren’t written), mainly because they just get buried by the saxes, trumpets, and bones. read more

Although you can find many Jazz flutists around, most jazz bands consist of a "woodwinds" person who can play Flute, Sax, and Clarinet. I teach flute now, and played flute from beginning band all the way through college, and I don't ever remember seeing someone who ONLY played flute in a jazz band. read more
