On the noodle cups I have seen they all say to microwave for 2 minutes... There's different densities of styrofoam. Some can take more heat than others. The plate from the restaurant probably had food with grease on it? That's gonna get a little hotter in the microwave. read more

First of all, Styrofoam cups are NOT microwave safe in reality. Their secret is that you use them to contain a liquid or semi-liquid that absorbs MORE energy than the cup itself. Thereby the contents heats but the heat is contained by the cup AND, for no extra charge, the Styrofoam material acts as a barrier and insulator to maintain that heat longer than say a glass or microwave safe plastic tumbler. read more
