I'm not a biologist or an expert - so I can't provide a scientific answer for you, except for what I found out when I noticed this myself. In the USA, even in tropical areas it seems there is an excess of seagulls and pelicans are always sighted - so you would expect the same when you go south of the equator. read more
In the 1950s and 1960s there were no pelicans or pied or sooty oyster catchers. Peewees were common, and there were not many wattle birds. Seeing an osprey was a rare treat, and seeing a sandpiper doing its “wounded, dragging a wing” trick was a welcome holiday ritual. read more
