Basically, at this point, Blacks usually like to dance to the “beat of their own drummer” type of music - that is, music of their own race, in a more freestyle way and not usually with a partner, and it seemed like ballroom dance and its music did not fit African-Americans at all. read more

One other thing that bears on this, at least in the US, is African-American culture. You should have seen my black friends' reactions when I told them it was ballroom dance I was doing. Very few could understand why. I think there's a socio-economic divide here. Upper or upper middle class people find balroom dance acceptable. Others may not. read more
