Half moon at First Quarter is overhead at sunset, and sets at midnight. Half moon at Last Quarter rises at midnight, and is overhead at dawn. So for a crescent moon to be seen, it must be before First or after Last Quarter moons. That means that it is not in the sky at all at midnight, ever. read more
