Basically, your argument is that wealthy states tend to vote democratic, therefore wealthy people tend to vote democratic. This is an instance of the Ecological fallacy. Gelman shows that actually wealthy people tend to vote conservative (with their presumed economic interest) though the effect is weaker in wealthy states. read more
