I can't help but feel bad for the guy, it seems like he was always in the mix but he repeatedly failed to win an election. People like that make powerful enemies, and Henry Clay did. Andrew Jackson said one of his regrets is that he never had the chance to shoot Clay, who he felt had helped rig the 1824 election against him, among other run-ins they had. In 1844, Clay lost the national popular vote by James K. Polk by about 39,000 votes. read more
