Taboos probably developed when an animal was much more useful for non-food uses, like the dog and horse in Europe. There was a strong taboo on eating horse, even made official by the Church. The French Revolution made a point of overthrowing this, as the horse was associated with the aristocracy, and promoted horsemeat eating. read more
