All of the novels published during her life -- Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma -- were published anonymously. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion appeared together posthumously with a biographical notice that identified her for the first time publicly as the author of the other novels. read more

Published anonymously, people would be likely to assume the book was written by a man. If they knew it was written by a woman, they may have been put off, since women writing books wasn't really "the done thing" at the time. read more
