Get enough of them in a room and put them against Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella, and it looks damning, especially when at least some of them (Gendry, Barra) also have blonde mothers. It's also possible that someone might try to put one of the older bastards, like Edric Storm, on the throne instead of Cersei's children. read more

So it was not simply a question of "now that the king is dead let's have a free for all". The one who got to be king was the closest thing to a Targ there was.
