Maya Angelou, the esteemed poet, writer, and actress died Wednesday in her Winston-Salem home. The literary giant, most known for her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Phenomenal Woman, a collection of poetry, was one of the foremost African-American writers and thinkers of her time. read more

Brooks and eight other Republicans voted against the resolution to rename a post office in Winston-Salem after Angelou, a Missouri native who spent much of her life in North Carolina. Angelou died in 2014. Brooks said he opposed the proposal due to Angelou's support of communism, particularly her backing of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. read more
