Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in trasforming the government of South Africa from one that was opressive to black (and Indian) people. read more
Yet he chose not only to forgive, but to actively seek reconciliation at a national level. His pursuit of forgiveness and "turning the other cheek" is something almost never seen. He actively sought national unity in a way few politicians ever do. He wasn't perfect, but his example in this regard was easily deserving of the Nobel Prize. read more
