They would often draw a large crowd, who would cheer with satisfaction as some black boy was “put in his place” or “taught a lesson”. Sure people enjoyed public executions. Very dramatic. Same reason people with simple minds now enjoy watching characters get shot, beaten up, pushed off buildings, and incinerated in the movies or on TV. And such events let people feel superior, because they weren’t the one being hanged or burned or decapitated. read more
