Why did Sir Isaac Newton write the Principia?

There is an interesting story behind it: In 1684 Dr Halley(inventor of deep-sea diving bell) came to visit Newton at Cambridge to ask him what he thought the curve would be that would be described by the Planets supposing the force of attraction towards the Sun to be reciprocal to the square of their distance from it. read more

Sir Isaac looked among his papers but could not find it. Pressed by Halley, Newton agreed to redo the calculations and produce a paper. He did as promised, but then did much more. read more
