I think the main reason that so many cults emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s was the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. This act got rid of the racist pro-white quotas that had characterized the United States’ immigration system up until that point. read more

If anything, I think the 50's might be a better candidate for the time when cults really got going in America. In fairness to OP's assumptions, the Hare Krishnas are another major cult that started in the 60s.
